We will continue our tour with a visit at the Fagaras Fortress. Situated right in the heart of Romania, the Fagaras Fortress is located in the town with the same name. The Fotress represents one of Eastern Europe’s largest and best-preserved feudal Castle complexes. The feudal Castle in Fagaras, whose construction began in the late 14th century and continued through successive additions until the middle of the 18th century, was preceded by a wooden fort, surrounded by a moat and wave of land, archaeologically attested to 12th century. This is the only fortress of its kind in Romania. In the early 17th century, the city became the princely residence of Michael the Brave and the citadel expanded continuously, reflecting the growing wealth of a center that exercised control over much of Transylvania and central Romania.
From 1948 until 1960 the castle was used as a prison. One of the most famous torture device called “The Iron Lady” has been found in one of its towers. Nowadays the castle hosts the Fagaras Country Museum, dedicated to local history and the municipal library.Fagaras Fortress ranks second in the top of the most beautiful castles in the world, according to a classification made by Hopper, a well known website dedicated to travel planning.
